Garageland Rodeo, ‘Hook’ Entertain Thursday At Main Street Plaza

Garageland Rodeo is the band playing at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the latest event in the Shell Martinez Refinery Downtown Martinez Summer Concert and Movie summer series.

The band is a seven-piece free-wheeling powerhouse that plays rock and blues with a heavy soul influence. The blend produces its distinctive sound and style.

The movie “Hook” will be shown at 8:45 p.m. Thursday after the band plays. Starring Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts, “Hook” is the story of attorney Peter Banning who must rescue his young children after they are stolen by his old nemesis, Captain Hook. During the rescue, Banning returns to his original personality, Peter Pan, and faces his past, in which he abandoned Neverland and left Tinkerbell and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves.

Second Sunday Open Air Market Aug. 12

The Second Sunday Open Air Market, which runs through October, will let shoppers browse through and buy vintage, collectible, antique and artistic items during the Farmers Market hours Aug. 12. The market will have vendors along the 800 block of Main Street or in Main Street Plaza in the 600 block of Main Street.

CofC ‘Martinis on the Plaza Gala’ Tickets Go On Sale

Tickets to the Sept. 15 Martinez Chamber of Commerce Martinis on the Plaza Gala are available for purchase.

A fundraiser for the Chamber, the event also celebrates Martinez as the birthplace of the Martini cocktail and a place of other rich history. The ninth gala, the signature event will take place around the Ignacio Plaza fountain across from Martinez City Hall, 525 Henrietta St.

Its theme is the Martini lounges of the 1940s-1960s, highlighted by the original “Rat Pack” era. Live music, a full catered dinner, specialty beverages , beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks will be served. Dress is optional black tie, cocktail or period attire.

Several establishments will send their expert bartenders to compete in the “Best Martini in the Martinez Area” and “People’s Choice” awards.

Tickets are 70 per person for admission, food, two specialty Martinez and a commemorative photograph, $130 per couple for admission, food, four specialty martinis and commemorative photograph, and are available online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/martinis-on-the-plaza-gala-2018-tickets-47737211284?aff=eac2. Additional beverages may be purchased for $5. All guests must be at least 21 years old.

Chamber Survey Asks Visitors’ Experience

Martinez Chamber of Commerce is asking website visitors to take a survey about their experiences while in the city. Those interested in taking the survey may visit the Chamber website, http://www.martinezchamber.com/.

Mitchoff Participating In ‘State of the East Bay’ Aug. 8

Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors Chairperson Karen Mitchoff will join Alameda County District 3 Supervisor Wilma Chan in giving presentations at the State of the East Bay event at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Lafayette Veterans Memorial Center, 3780 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Lafayette.

Those interested must register by Monday, Aug. 6.

The event is organized by the East Bay Leadership Council, Innovation Tri-Valley Leadership Group and the East Bay Economic Development Alliance, and is sponsored by Shell Martinez Refinery.

It includes discussion about key regional initiatives, including health care, infrastructure investment, workforce development, housing affordability and economic competitiveness.
