MARTINEZ, Calif. – Residents can pick up free compost March 23 at Martinez Yacht Club in a giveaway by the city of Martinez and Republic Services, which handles the city’s garbage and recycling servicesThe compost giveaway will be at the same time as the Martinez Marina’s annual Swap Meet.
The compost to be distributed has been produced through the Organics Recycling Collection Program that is a collaboration between the city and its franchise holder.
Any resident with an identification with a Martinez address can receive up to 30 gallons of much for his or her household, said Marie Knutson, recycling coordinator.
Employees of Republic Services will be at the marina to load residents’ containers, she said. Those who want the compost must bring their own containers, and Knutson said five-gallon buckets are ideal for this.
In addition, Republic Services will be collecting clean plastic foam (Styrofoam) blocks and containers that can be recycled. However, the company will not be accepting the plastic foam packing peanuts, Knutson said.
The compost giveaway, at the Yacht Club, 111 Tarantino Drive, will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23.
That’s also the same time as the Martinez Marina’s annual Swap Meet at 7 North Court St.
Shoppers can browse vendors and shop at tables at the annual event. No booth fees are charged to sellers.
Those interested in participating in the Swap Meet may call the Harbor Master Office, 925-313-0942, and those interested in the compost giveaway may call 925-671-5814.
