Martinez Area Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is proud to announce the receipt of multiple donations from supportive community companies. “It is amazing what a few newly certified members can do for CERT. They requested grant donations that resulted in over $3000 in donations to date,” noted Gwenda Webster, CERT’s new volunteer Class & Training Manager.
Andeavor Refinery of Martinez notified CERT that they are donating $12,500 for its emergency response equipment, training gear, and upgrades to the existing communication trailer. In addition, Chevron donated $1000, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) donated $500 for Wildfire Community Preparedness Day activities, and PG&E donated $350 to Martinez Area CERT.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, which allows them to focus on more complex tasks. Through CERT, the capabilities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters is built and enhanced. The greater Martinez Area CERT offers this 20 hour basic training on Saturday mornings or Tuesday nights in the spring and fall. Additionally, we offer two hour Personal Emergency Preparedness classes to residential groups and businesses.
“We have a duty to build a Culture of Preparedness in which our neighbors, families and friends are ready for any disaster event, to make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared. Each one of us has a responsibility to understand the risks, both natural and man-made, that disasters pose to our communities and to recognize we have a role in preparing for these events,” said Webster.
Please join Martinez CERT in helping our community prepare for possible disasters in our city.
