Grand jury applicants sought

The Contra Costa County Superior Court is accepting applications for its Civil Grand Jury service for Fiscal Year 2018-19, said spokesperson Joan D’Onofrio.

The 19 selected members will serve for one year starting in July, concluding June 2019, and will monitor, review and report on city and county governments.

Once chosen and sworn in. jurors will attend a two-week training session, during which they’ll meet key members of local governments and learn their functions.

They will organize into committees to investigate local government agencies, research topical materials, interview county executives and their staff, gather facts and issue written reports accompanied by recommendations that would benefit residents of Contra Costa County.

Some of the information they will learn will be confidential.

The grand jury was established by the state Constitution in 1849 and applies to each of California’s 58 counties

Jurors receive a stipend and mileage reimbursement as well as a parking permit. Applicants must be United States citizens at least 18 who have lived in Contra Costa County at least one year prior to being selected. They need a working knowledge of Microsoft, and understanding the Excel program “is a plus,” D’Onofrio said.

Those interested may contact the Office of the Civil Grand Jury, 925-608-2621. Applications are available online at www.co-courts.org/grandjury and at all county libraries. Deadline to apply is March 23.
