Resident of Martinez, Calif.
Fred William Howard, born and raised in Martinez on April 20, 1947, passed peacefully on June 11, 2019. He was firstborn to the late Paul and Mary Howard, attending local schools and graduating from Alhambra High School, class of ’65.
Fred (or Uncle Freddie or Fraedo to his friends and their families) maintained strong connections with childhood friends as well as many others that he met throughout his life. He was known for his humor and quick dry wit, followed by a big infectious laugh, and a willingness to give his time and hands on skills of carpentry and remodeling expertise to many projects.
In the 70’s, Fred lived in Alaska, Washington, and Oregon, working as a commercial fisherman, carpenter and painter. He settled in Everson, Washington, building a cabin in the forest with a little help from his friends where he was able to appreciate nature and its beauty. In the 80’s, Fred returned to Martinez where he continued his construction work and enjoyed cooking, gardening, music, bocce, and following his beloved SF 49’ers, Giants, and Warriors. Fred will be missed by many friends and family.
Surviving family include his sisters, Janet Millar (Jim), Martinez, and Marilyn Christensen (Ron), Quincy, CA; nephews and nieces Bret Millar (Gina) and Morgan Millar (Sarah), Martinez, Alison Christensen, Chico, CA, and Julie Christensen Hammond (Andrew), Quincy, CA. Surviving grand nephews and niece are Nicholas Stockdale, Natalie Stockdale, Cameron Millar, Jack Hammond and Baby Millar due in August.
Date and location of a Celebration of Life will be announced on FaceBook and by Martinez “Word-of-Mouth” in the next few weeks. Charitable donations to Alhambra High School Athletic Dept., 150 E Street, Martinez, CA 94553 would be very much appreciated on behalf of Fred and his love of local sports.
