MARTINEZ, Calif. – Martinez residents can obtain something that is good for the environment and get rid of something that can harm the environment Aug. 18 near the Martinez Yacht Club.
Each household can receive up to 30 gallons of compost, which can be used to enrich a yard, said Marie Knutson, recycling coordinator for Republic Services, the city’s contractor for removing trash and recycling suitable items. The mulch comes from the expanded green waste and organics collections.
“The city and Republic Services are excited to let residents share in the success of the organics recycling collection program by providing another free compost giveaway,” she said.
Those interested will need to bring a form of identification with a Martinez address, and must bring containers for the compost. Knutson recommended 5-gallon buckets.
At the same time, Republic Services will be collecting clean Styrofoam, or plastic foam. However, packing “peanuts” will not be accepted, Knutson said.
This is the same weekend as the Marina Swap Meet, which will be set up near the yacht club as well.
The compost giveaway and Styrofoam collection will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, near the Martinez Yacht Club, 111 Tarantino Drive in the Martinez Waterfront Park.
