Sonoma Drags & Drifts returns to Sonoma Raceway today for another season of quarter-mile action and sideways drifting.
The popular program of amateur drag racing on the drag strip and drifting behind the main grandstands and on the road course will take place most Wednesday nights through Nov. 14.
Sonoma Drags & Drifts has been a part of Sonoma Raceway’s program of events for the past 30 years. It gives local drivers a safe, legal and controlled environment to race their cars on the track’s quarter-mile drag strip.
Anyone with a driver license and a car that passes a simple technical inspection may compete in the drag races. Cost for students with a valid high school identification is $15 and to other competitors, $25.
Sonoma Drift, just yards away on the skid pad, is a worldwide driving competition judged on speed, angle, showmanship and the line taken through a set course, rather than who finishes first.
The field is limited to 40 each week, and usually sells out. Drivers are being asked to register online, since no on-site registration is available. Cost is $40.
Registration is available at www.sonomaraceway.com/events/sonoma-drift/.
Wednesday Nights starts at 3:30 p.m., with eliminations starting at 6:30 p.m. The Sonoma Drift Runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesdays. The events are popular with race fans. Spectator admission is $10, and children 12 and younger are admitted at no charge. Parking also is free.
Those interested may call the Drag Racing Hotline, 800-870-7223 Extension 209, since drag racing is weather permitting. Drifting runs rain or shine. The schedule is available online at sonomaraceway.com/schedule. Sonoma Raceway Drag Racing and Sonoma Drift both have Facebook pages.
