MARTINEZ, Calif. – Martinez Police will celebrate National Coffee with a Cop Day today in Main Street Plaza.
Residents and visitors will be able to have a cup of coffee with Martinez Police Chief Manjit Sappal and other members of the Martinez Police Department, and meet those who patrol their community.
Coffee with the Cops has grown out of an idea in 2011 encouraged by Hawthorne Police and the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Policing.
The grassroots movement had a simple idea – bringing residents and their police officers together in ways that let them learn about each other and strengthen bonds. There are no agendas, no speeches. Instead, the sessions are designed to encourage open communication.
Since that beginning, Coffee with a Cop has grown to all 50 states and 14 other countries.
Martinez’s Coffee with a Cop Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today in Main Street Plaza, near Starbucks, in the 600 block of Main Street, and is open to the public.
