Martinez Police Departmen press release:
On Friday, August 24th, 2018, at about 1:54pm, the Martinez Police Department (MPD) Dispatch Center received a call from a staff member at Vicente High School reporting that a juvenile student had just been threatened by an adult male who was holding a razor at the time of the confrontation.
The adult suspect left the area after a verbal exchange with the student, and the student was not injured. At the time of the call, the student was in the school building with the staff member. This incident occurred across the street from the school and did not occur on the Vicente campus.
Upon receiving the call, officers were dispatched to the school and were able to determine the identity of the adult suspect.
Officers then responded to the 1600 block of LaSalle Street to contact the suspect. Initially, the suspect refused to exit his residence to speak with officers, so LaSalle Street between Warren Street and Arreba Street was blocked off to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic while officers negotiated with the suspect.
At approximately 2:17pm, the suspect voluntarily exited his residence and was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect, Gilbert Rodriguez, a 40-year-old Martinez resident, was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility for charges of brandishing and cruelty to a child.
We want to recognize the quick thinking of the Martinez Unified School District Staff and their dedication to keeping our students safe.
